New Mercedes E-Class will keep you from falling asleep

How about coffee when you are about to fall asleep when driving? This is just one of the many cutting edge safety features on the new E-class to be delivered by Mercedes Benz. Other safety features incorporated on the model include night vision, blind spot connection and adaptive cruise control. All of these features are seen as well on the Mercedes Benz S550 but what makes the new Mercedes E-Class unique is the presence of the Attention Assist- ensures that you will not fall asleep on the road! This safety feature uses 70 parameters to check if the driver is sleeping. And once it detects that the driver is starting to fall asleep, there will be a warning tone and a coffee cup icon will light up on the dashboard. Among the parameters used in this new Mercedes safety feature are the steering-wheel input and the driver’s ability to make sharp corrections.


Sex and the City and Mercedes

Mercedes-Benz joined the bandwagon. After the success of Transformers movie with a tie-in with General Motors and Audi’s own attempt to market Audi vehicles specially the Audi R8, it’s now the turn of Mercedes-Benz to take advantage of the power of this media. The company has forged a partnership with New Line Cinema for the up-coming movie Sex and the City that stars Sarah Jessica Parker, among others. The partnership includes promotional advertisements and the S-Class in the background shots of the movie. The character of Kim Catrall will also drive the new GLK-350 compact SUV. There will also be a Sex and the City-themed Mercedes commercial that will be shown.

Even before Mercedes-Benz entered the picture, the show has been known as the marketer’s heaven. Brand names and luxury goods are name-dropped on a a regular basis on the show. Manolo Blahnik heels, designer gowns and dresses and other symbols of materialism are often mentioned and paraded on the show. Some of the mentioned brands like Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahniks have become household names, thanks to the show’s characters. Now, it’s Mercedes-Benz turn to take advantage on what was referred to as the ‘superbowl for women’. The label is in reference to the fact that the football championships draw tons of money from advertisements. Including Mercedes-Benz, the movie has partnerships with at least eight companies. Mercedes is one; and Steve Cannon of Mercedes-Benz said that his company do not pay for product placement but has its own media campaign promoting its involvement with the film and the product used.

Federer, Mercedes-Benz (China) Partnership

Roger Federer, the World’s top ranked tennis player since 2004 has partnered with Mercedes-Benz China. The two camps have entered into a multi-year advertising and strategic marketing partnership. This isn’t the first time that a well-known tennis player has signed contracts with an auto manufacturer. In fact, Spain’s Rafael Nadal also partnered with Kia and Maria Sharapova partnered with Land Rover.As part of the deal, Federer is set to join ‘Swing for the Stars’ a Junior Tennis Development Program that was launched by Mercedes-Benz in cooperation with the China Tennis Association. Federer in a statement said;

It’s exciting to work with a top brand like Mercedes-Benz in China. I look forward to helping them grow their business while increasing the popularity of tennis in China.

The project of the Mercedes-Benz, the ‘Swing for the Stars’ Junior Development Program is designed to help improve the skills of junior players and the coaches’ teaching level, so that they may be developed and in the long run help the development of tennis in China in the future.

Federer just recently won his first title for the year in Estoril, a clay court event. He also participated at the Monte Carlo Masters in Monte Carlo, where he lost to Rafael Nadal 5-7 5-7. Federer and Nadal has been ranked number 1 and 2 for many months now.

The ‘Ring’


No, this isn’t the movie. Though I really love that movie, the original version that is. I am talking about the strip that is so popular among tuners and car manufacturers. It’s name is oft-repeated when talks shift to car testing and development. I am talking about Nurburgring. I just did a little research on this strip since this name once again popped out when I did a small research on the Lexus LF-A. I also remembered this strip since I read that the Nissan Skyline GT-R was also tested here.

The Nurburgring is also named as the The Ring by the enthusiasts; and this race track is located in Nurburg, Germany. In its original form, the race track originally featured four track configurations. This race track as mentioned played host to a number of cars in production and most importantly played host to prototypes in development. The demanding layout of the tracks help car manufacturers probe their cars and prototypes. Some of the big names that used this site includes Nissan for their GT-R, Toyota for the Lexus supercar, BMW, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Saleen and also General Motors. General Motors is new to the track and one of the very first models that was tested at the track is the Cadillac CTS-V and the fifth generation Chevrolet Corvette.

Mercedes’ “Holy Role”

When the Pope visits US this week and makes a public appearance, expect his choice of vehicle to include a Mercedes. This vehicle is what is known right now as the Popemobile. The use of this kind of vehicle to transport the Pope in public places is driven by the ‘foiled’ assassination attempt on the Pope. The use of the mobile was adopted in the early 80s after the thwarted assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in 1981. It’s use will enable the Pope to be seen, without endangering him. The Mercedes Benz will be one of the two models that are used by the Pope in events like this. When he makes his public appearance then travels, the Pope is expected to receive the kind of security befitting a head of state. It was mentioned as well that the papal motorcade that will happen in New York will resemble the same precautions that are often reserved for presidential visits and the annual New Year’s day celebrations. So with these kinds of precautions set in place, people can expect a very significant police presence.

So what kind of Mercedes will that be. One of the articles that I searched on the net reveals that the vehicle is a modified Mercedes Benz ML430. This vehicle was donated by the manufacturer in 2002. This vehicle features 272 horsepower from a V8 4.3 Liter engine. Also featured on the vehicle is an enclosure on top that measures six feet. This Mercedes is extra special. The interior or the Pope’s chair features white leather trimmed in gold. The vehicle’s interior has a full climate control system that can allow the Pope to desire the temperature that he wants. A full stereo system is on board as well and features a ‘tape deck’.

You may think that the technology may be a little to old; so a number of automakers such as Audi and BMW submitted plans and designs for a new Pope vehicle. But the Pope opted to retain the Mercedes so as to save money. In all, Mercedes-Benz has accumulated 75 years of papal transportation services.

On to Miami

The 19-game winning run of Sharapova was cut short, Nadal’s bid for another Pacific Life Open title was demolished and Federer’s losing streak for 2008 was extended by Mardy Fish. These are just some of the sub-plots that have been underscored at the recently concluded Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells. These are may favorites and they lost. I’m over it and now looking forward to Miami for the Sony Ericsson Open.

After skipping the Pacific Life Open, Justine Henin is set to compete again as the number 1 seed and she will have a first-round bye. Serena and Venus Williams entered the competition, together with Davenport, Jelena Jankovic and Amelie Mauresmo. My fave Sharapova did not enter and cited an injured shoulder (again?). Serena is the defending champion here.

The men’s side on the other hand will feature Federer, Roddick, Davydenko, Nadal, Blake and the Pacific Life Open Champion, Novak Djokovic. Federer will need to reassure his fans now that everything is still in order.

The said event will be played March 26-April 6 at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Miami. Though Sony Ericsson is the leading sponsor of the said event, a number of well-known brands act as sponsors as well. Mercedes-Benz is one of the well-known sponsors of the event. Perhaps this is Mercedes’ last year of sponsorship for the Sony Ericsson Open since I read last time that the brand is intent on diversifying its sponsorship to exclude tennis and to include other sports such as golf. If I remember it correctly Mercedes-Benz will only finish the 2008 season before wrapping things up with tennis.

Since Sharapova will not be competing, I’d rather stick with Justine Henin to win the title and on the men’s side, as much as I like Rafa, his chances is slim. Federer will finally win his title, and I will be happy to see Rafa in the semis.

McLaren+Mercedes Benz= A Legend.

Donald Trump owns one. I’m dreaming of one. That’s how rare and special this Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is. Okay, my intro is lame.Haha. Now back to this amazing car coming from Mercedes-Benz.

This collaboration coming from a known and respected car manufacturer and an equally-reknowned racing participant has produced a top super car. From the engine, to the looks and to the overall construction and materials used- this super car is a league in itself.

The SLR Mclaren is classified as as sports car and this model is compared to the Porsche Carrera GT and the Enzo Ferrari. But thanks to the ride’s automatic gearbox, the front mid-engined arrangement and its driving characteristics, this car is often classified as a Super GT just like the Aston Martin V12 vanquish and the Ferrari 599 GTB. To further underscore the superioriority of the car, this Super GT is considered as the fastest automatic transmission car in the world.

So what makes the SLR different from the other cars out there? The difference lies in its engine, the construction and its engineering. At the center of the performance of the SLR is a 232 kilogram hand built, 5.4 liter supercharged all-aluminum SOHC V8 engine. With regards to the performance of the SLR, actual figures may vary, but is performance is rock-solid. This model can zoom from 0 to 100 km/h in about 3.1 seconds, from 0 to 200 km/h in 9.5 seconds and can race to 300 km/h in roughly 24.4 seconds. The car’s top speed of 360 km/h is nothing to sneeze at. Such power is well complimented by the presence of ultra-stylish and sporty looks and design that could make the SLR a stand-out in any gathering.

For 2006 a new version was introduced in the market, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition. The magic number 722 actually refers to the victory by Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson in a Mercedes-Benz SLR 300 with a starting number of 722 at the Mille Miglia in 1955. This is a better version of the SLR and this can race to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds! A tuned version of the 722 is also available, the 722 GT.

What’s Driving Our Billionaire$$?

If money is not a problem, what would you drive? If money is not an issue, what cars will you collect? Interesting questions is’nt it? Make you wanna stop your task for a while and dream on. Dreaming is free, and let me tell you the products of my dreams. Mercedes sports coupe’ always get me excited, Lexus sports coupe’ as well. Count an Eclipse, and throw in a tough pick-up of GM okay, make it a Silverado. Actually my list goes go and on for a while, in fact I am losing the focus of my content for the day! Okay, lets shift our attention to my current fixation. What’s driving our billionaires or should I say, what are they driving?

I asked this question since I come across an article on msn.com that deals with the cars of the rich. The article talks about what cars are most popular for the country’s rich, and what does it means if one person acquires a particular brand/model.

Take the case of billionaire Stephen Wynn, known for his high-end hotels like the Wynn Las Vegas. Wynn bought his wife a blue 2007 Ferrari F430 Spyder when they toured Ferrari’s facility in Milan. Aside from this model, Mrs Wynn also drives a Bently Arnage and a Jeep Grand Cherooke.

Another personality that spends so much for his car is real estate magnate Donald Trump. Trump likes Phantoms and Ferraris as well. He also drives a rare super car, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. The SLR McLaren should look like this.


This car combines that style and the luxury that is reserved for Mercedes Benz, and the brawn and power known to McLaren.  This model of Mercedes Benz features a full carbon-fiber monocoque, crash structures and body panels and this mdoel is powered by a 617 horsepower supercharged 5.5 Liter V8 engine. This engine can send the SLR from zero to 60 miles per hour in 3.8 seconds. Top speed of the SLR may top 200 miles per hour. Another thing that makes the SLR McLaren impressive is the fact that this car features a high level of protection for its occupants. Perhaps this is a carry-over from the fact that Formula 1 Racing is such a dangerous sport, so vehicle safety comes first.  This SLR is the first series production vehicle to incorporate  a front crash structure that is made exclusively from carbon. Carbon composite material as we know by now can provide rigidity and strength. This kind of material and engineering can absorb four to five times more energy in a severe frontal collison or impact on the road if comapred with other materials, like conventional steel.

Another cool collector is Ralph Lauren, the name behind Polo. His collections include a 1929 Blower Bentley, 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing Coupe, 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, 1996 McLaren F1 and the 2007 Bugatti Veyron. His collection is cool and respectable, ( who am I kidding?) impressive to say the least.

Money for these people allows them to splurge not just on things that they fancy, but on things that reflect their own personalities as well. Lucky them! And for us ordinary mortals, what we can do is to dream and drool.

Mercedes Benz For Indian Wells

Aside from flashy and top-of-the-line cars, my interest also lies with tennis. From time to time, I do check out the scene and find out who’s the current ‘it girl’ in the circuit right now. It is also my hobby to constantly check on the latest scores and the latest happenings in the game. And while I was blog-hopping and site-hopping early in the day, I was informed that Pacific Life Open is set to begin today. The site is at Indian Wells in California. Daniella Hantuchova is the defending champion and it is expected that six members of the current top ten in the women’s circuit will be in action. Anna Ivanovic is expected to be a favorite of course, and I am not counting Sharapova out. You see, Sharapova is in-form right now and she is unbeaten for 2008. She won Australian Open without dropping a set, and she won a Tier 1 event again in Qatar. This goes to show how good Maria is if she is in form.

Another thing that I noticed is the fact that one of the sponsors of the Pacific Life Open 2008 is Mercedes Benz. Last year, it was reported that Mercedes Benz is expected to no longer renew its sponsorship deal with ATP this 2008. ATP is the governing body of men’s tennis circuit.  It was reported last year that Mercedes wanted to shift its focus of its marketing to golf, horse riding and soccer, as well as fashion and lifestyle. Olaf Goettgens VP of Brand Communications added:

Over the years our partnership with the ATP has had a very high-brand fit for Mercedes-Benz but we are now adding a new angle to our revised brand positioning.

The deal with ATP is expected to end this 2008. Now I am not quite sure if this includes WTA- the governing body of women’s tennis. I just hope that the Mercedes brand continues its support so that the sport can grow more and if not, here’s hoping that a new sponsor can fill in the void once Mercedes ends its role in the circuit.
