A whiff of fresh and good news this morning- Maria Sharapova earned her second title this year with a win over Jelena Jankovic in the finals of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati. This tournament took a hit due to a number of reported injuries and pull-outs including Serena and Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters and Viktoria Azarenka. Number 1 Caroline Wozniaki was knocked out in the first round, making this Cincy event wide open. Sharapova took advantage of this, and took out the competition. Sharapova defeated Vera in the semi-finals, and outlasted Jankovic in an error-prone match. This is the second title for Sharapova, having won a clay event in Rome and this puts her in a good position for the US Open.
On the men’s side, fatigue caught up with Djokovic as he retired against Andy Murray. Finally, a title for Murray who is suffering from a so-so season.
