Crime and Punishment

Just like any other observer in this country, I was surprised upon learning that former Secretary Angelo Reyes ended his life. As a military man and a former Secretary of Defence, by default he should have been a stronger man. But no, based on news reports, it appeared that the former Secretary and supporter of the former President appeared to have ended his life. This is a shocking end for a rich and storied life of the General. But as I was reading some of the news stories, I could not help but think that what had just happened had shades of the story of Dostoyevsky in his opus Crime and Punishment. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me and my near-rock bottom faith in the justice system. But to conjecture at this time is unfair, no? May he rest in peace.
